Podcast No. 0004: Main Street Electrical Parade and the history according to Disney.

Disneyland Main Street Electrical Parade

This month on Dispodopolis we discuss the Main Street Electrical Parade. Little known to us, this was a must do for Fiona before it was retired, again. Starting in 1977, Main Street Electrical Parade existed our entire childhood and was part of every visit to Disneyland. We were too young to remember it not being there.

It is hard to remember the version I saw in 1977. Floats I do vividly remember are: the Blue Fairy; the Disneyland drum, the calliope with King Leonidas; Cinderella’s canopy and clock tower; Alice in Wonderland’s critters roaming around and the giant mushroom; Pete’s Dragon; the celebration of America’s bi-centennial with the girls dressed as yankees.

The story of the Main Street Electrical Parade actually starts back in 1972 when the President of Disneyland, Card Walker, wanted something new and exciting at Disneyland. There was a need to remind people of Disneyland in California, because Walt Disney World in Florida had just opened in Florida. The ideas came from many directions but one major influence was the Magic Kingdom Electrical Water Pageant.

There are so many versions of this parade and so many Disney parks that have their own version. The parade has been seen at Florida’s Magic Kingdom, Tokyo Disneyland and Disneyland Paris. The Original Disneyland Main Street Electrical Parade ran from 1972-1996 with a few years off in between. It was technologically ahead of its time and changed the way parades and night time entertainment would be experienced.

Before we discuss the parade, we start by discussing what float we would add to the Main Street Electrical Parade when it returns. Each of us discusses a different animated feature, with Fiona discussing two. We also discuss where we would place our float in the parade.

After we finish our discussion on the Main Street Electrical Parade, we end with our discussion of the new Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout ride. We discuss our thoughts of the redesigned attraction and all its details. This is full of spoilers, because our moms don’t mind. We also discuss the fun events and activities they had for the Summer of Heroes.

If you have any comments, questions or fun and fancy free thoughts for us, email us at comments@dispodopolis.com. Our moms still haven't sent any questions in yet, so we are relying on anyone out there to help us. Please enjoy our latest podcast, Dispodopolis.
