This month on Dispodopolis we discuss the Walt Disney Family Museum. Fiona and I talk about our second trip to the museum, while Ryan discusses his first. We all had the opportunity to visit the museum this summer. Amazingly out visits were within days of each other’s visits.
The Walt Disney Family Museum opened on October 1, 2009 in San Francisco, California on the grounds of the Presidio. The Presidio has a vast modern history running for 400 years. It is a beautifully preserved property that overlooks the San Francisco Bay with a view of the Golden Gate Bridge. The entrance to the museum is modest and doesn’t give away the treasures that lay inside. Until you enter the first gallery you could be at any museum. The immersive environment that takes you back in time starts when you enter tht first gallery and the door closes behind you.
We discuss the ten galleries inside the museum, the cafe and the museum shop. We talk about some of our favorite parts and treasures, and parts that you shouldn’t miss. The museum runs chronologically, starting with Walt Disney’s birth in Chicago. The museum intreprets Walt Disney’s life as well as the studio and the company he built. The tenth gallery ends with the world’s reaction to Walt Disney’s death. The museum also has a exhibition that runs in the Diane Disney Miller Exhibition Hall. We will discuss the show in a later episode, but do discuss the “Deja View: The Art of Andreas Deja” show that was located in the Theater Gallery.
Before we jump into our discussion of our our visit to the Walt Disney Family Museum we will be discussing our favorite Micky Mouse shorts. We talk about Mickey’s first appearance in a feature length film, Fantasia to two of his most famous shorts, “Clock Workers” and “Ghost Hunters.” We also discuss one of his later appearances in “Mickey’s Christmas Carol.”
